Media Studies 260: Contemporary Media

Media Studies 160

Media Studies is a broad area of study, involving the production of media, the scripts created through media, the effect of media on its target audience, and the varying effectiveness of different types of media. My media studies coursework has helped me to better understand how to create media that will effectively communicate with its audience, as well as how to choose the best medium with which to communicate.

Study

This course was the beginning of my study of media. It included a broad overview of the different forms of media, the best ways to implement each one, and an introduction to the way in which one should read a piece of media.

For this course, I evaluated the effectiveness of Hermione Granger as a character in the Harry Potter series, asserting that she is more than a character foil for the male characters in the series.

This course built upon the skills developed in Media Studies 160, focusing particularly on media scripts from the past ten years. This course delved into the effectiveness of different types of media, questioning whether the medium or the message it conveys is more important, and broadened our understanding of the global effects of media.

For this course, I questioned the feminist implications of the film Pitch Perfect, showing that it is not quite as empowering as it may seem.

This course evaluates the effect of media on our perception of wellness, both physical and mental, by looking at various types of media and issues such as discrimination, diet, and medecine.

I am currently enrolled in this class; however, here is an evaluation of the wellness issues raised in the novel She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb and how they have influenced other areas of my life and study.

This course looked at the ethics behind various forms of media and art. Issues of ownership and censorship were discussed, as well as the decisions behind media and their ethical implications.

For this course, I considered the ethical implications of information sharing, particularly in the world of fan videos, as well as the definition of ownership of media.
